Far as long as he can remember, Ronan Johns has participated in Wheel 2 Heal, a cycling event raising money for Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation.  In 2010, at the age of 4, Ronan registered for the Kids Race and began his commitment to Wheel 2 Heal.

For the past 6 years, Ronan has been honoured to be crowned the Top Kids Fundraiser raising over $5,000 for the Foundation.  On top of that, Ronan has been a Hero for the last 3 years raising more than $1,000 each year.  “It makes me happy to raise money for the hospital,” says Ronan.

Donating back his fundraising prizes

The prize for being the Top Kids Fundraiser has been a brand new bike each year.  Ronan’s philanthropy doesn’t just end when the money is counted and the ride is done.  Ronan has donated his 5 new bikes back to the Foundation each year so that they can raise even more money.  The bikes are typically auctioned off at the Foundation’s Evening of Caring Gala.

I already have a nice Norco bike.  And my Dad can always get me another one,” says Ronan.  “The bike can raise more money for more hospital stuff or it can go to someone who really needs a bike.”

Going the extra mile to get donations

Ronan is a typical 9-year-old boy who likes Minecraft, Lego, drawing and playing on his iPad.  He raises money by asking his friends and family to donate.  He does this by posting videos on his mother’s Facebook account and by knocking on doors.  His fundraising strategy is to provide personalized incentives to those who donate.  Last year, he made a custom drawing for everyone who donated over $50 and mailed it to them with a thank you note.  He also promises his donors to complete his riding goal which was 15 km last year.

Why he rides

As a resident of Port Moody, Ronan likes raising money for his local hospital because it can help more kids get better and live longer.   One of his neighbours is also an emergency room nurse at Eagle Ridge Hospital so he thinks she should have the best equipment to make people better.  “I still want to do Wheel 2 Heal because they still need money to fix things.” says Ronan.

This year, Ronan will be jockeying for the Top Youth Fundraiser with some stiff competition from other philanthropic youth.  He plans to make custom 2-min movies for his big donors and give chocolates away.  And he is committing to ride the 40 km Trail Ride with his parents.  To donate to Ronan, visit his fundraising page.
